Front Page 98 - I have now followed Front Page from the beginning to the current Front Page 98 release (November 1997) and I have not been disappointed.  While there are many who would say that only serious Web Page developers write HTML from scratch - I would argue that only productive Web Page developers create with WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) tools.  The same logic for writing raw HTML would be used to say that only serious programmers would do all coding in assembly language.

There are a number of new features in Front Page 98 that are worth noting:

  • The three tabs for Normal, HTML, and Previewing your code.  You can directly edit content in both the Normal and HTML windows.  This should easily satisfy the HTML purists who want to see what the editor has created.
  • Built in graphic editing tools in Front Page.  This makes it quick and easy to perform simple corrections of graphics on your pages.
  • The linking dialogues are redone and improved making it easier to support both external links (to other Web Sites or to the local Web Site).
  • Frame creation and editing tools are much improved over the prior versions of Front Page.  You can easily create and edit frame-based sites.
  • Table creation and editing is improved (although it was pretty good before).

Given the changing nature of the Web and HTML, I expect we will see a new release of Front Page on a yearly basis.  Hopefully, they will all be as good as the past releases we have seen.
