Overview

Welcome to the World Wide Web segment for Multimedia Technology and Applications. As we told you in the preface of the book:

This book is an integral part of a three part presentation that includes:

  1. A textbook - Multimedia Technology and Application Development

  2. The CD-ROM that accompanies the book

  3. This World Wide Web Site

Each of these components are complimentary and support each other in delivering instruction.

The book provides a brief, concise overview of multimedia technology by focusing on technology and process that will have a lifespan of five to seven years – a lifetime in the computer industry. We have tried to avoid specific references to hardware, operating systems, and software products whenever possible. The book should be treated as a background resource that gives you a foundation in what multimedia is and what makes it work.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the book provides you with specific materials for hardware, operating systems, and software. It will contain examples of files demonstrating fonts, text layout, various graphics formats, audio formats, and video examples. The CD-ROM also contains a Windows software package called Springboard for developing multimedia applications. The CD-ROM compliments the book by providing in-depth examples in the environment, the computer, where you will be working with them.

This World Wide Web Site will provide you with up-to-the-moment information on hardware, software, products, and tools that you need to know about. It compliments the book and CD-ROM by being more timely.

The book, CD-ROM, and Web Site provides you with information that is complete, useful, educational, and timely. Furthermore, the book will not go out-of-date in a year or two because of product specific information, you will be able to use this text for years to come and still stay current by accessing the web site for late breaking information.

So What Does This Really Mean for this World Wide Web Site?

This Web Site contains:

  • Updates to information that is more current than the book and the CD-ROM.
  • Links to vendors, organizations, and information resources that will keep you on top of multimedia technology and applications.
  • Comments and discussions that are much more personalized than are normally found in the textbook or on a CD-ROM.
